Neuropsychological Assessment - What Is It?
A neuropsychological assessment (cognitive assessment) is a formal comprehensive evaluation of cognitive abilities (such as memory, attention, processing speed, problem-solving skills).
Tests are selected depending on the purpose of the assessment. The typical domains assessed include:
Intellectual functioning (IQ)
Attention/Concentration
Memory
Processing speed
Language/verbal skills
Visuo-spatial abilities
Executive abilities (planning, organisation, problem-solving)
Academic functioning (reading, writing, mathematics)
Neuropsychological Assessment - Why Complete One?
A neuropsychological assessment may be indicated when there is a question about or change in a person’s cognitive functioning. A neuropsychological assessment (cognitive assessment) can help to:
characterise strengths and challenges in your thinking skills
clarify a diagnosis (for example, an Intellectual Disability, type of Dementia, Acquired Brain Injury or learning difficulty)
track changes in cognitive functioning over time (recovery or decline)
detect the presence of abnormalities compared with normal aging
provide information on how someone learns best or identify barriers to learning.
provide information to guide cognitive rehabilitation interventions or therapeutic services (such as how to best support someone’s behaviour).
Neuropsychological Assessment - What Happens?
The Assessment consists of an initial interview, asking about any difficulties you might be experiencing and your current concerns as well as completing some ‘pencil and paper’ type tests and/or computerised tests. Information is collected primarily through answering questions, solving problems, and writing.
It is often helpful for Kate to speak with someone who knows you well (with your consent).
After the testing, your test scores are compared to people of a similar age and background to help determine your strengths and weaknesses, to exclude or diagnose an illness, or make recommendations on how to best support you.
Neuropsychological Assessment - How Long Does it Take?
Generally, a Neuropsychological Assessment takes several hours and may need to be completed over several sessions.
Neuropsychological Assessment - What to Bring and How to Prepare?
Try to have a good nights sleep the night prior to the assessment, try to eat a good breakfast and take all of your prescription medication as usual (if you take any).
It is recommended to avoid alcohol and other substances (at least 5 days beforehand).
Bring reading glasses if you wear them and hearing aids if you use them.
It can be useful to bring any relevant medical or hospital reports with you. It can also be useful to bring the contact details of anyone who can provide useful information.
You are welcome to bring any questions with you.
Neuropsychological Assessment - What is the Cost?
Fees vary depending on the complexity of the referral and time involved.
Medicare does not provide a rebate for neuropsychology services. Some private health insurers may cover part of the cost of a neuropsychology assessment, however it is your responsibility to enquire about any rebates with your health fund.
Please contact Kate for further information about pricing.
Neuropsychological Assessment - Do I Need a Referral?
You do not need a referral.
Referrals can be made by GPs, Psychiatrists, Health Professionals, or funding bodies with consent from the client.
General Psychology - What is the Cost and Do I Need a Referral?
You may be eligible for a rebate for accessing general psychology services (from Medicare, Private Health Insurance or NDIS).
Please obtain a referral with a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP prior to your first appointment if you wish to access 10 psychology sessions you are entitled to each calendar year (under the Medicare Benefits Scheme).
