Neuropsychological Assessment

A neuropsychological assessment is an evaluation of your cognitive (thinking) skills.

It can help to characterise cognitive strengths and challenges, clarify a diagnosis (such as an Intellectual Disability or Acquired Brain Injury), track changes in cognitive functioning over time, detect the presence of abnormalities compared with normal ageing (e.g., normal ageing vs dementia), provide supportive information for a diagnosis (such as learning or attentional difficulties), provide information on how someone learns best, assist with Positive Behaviour Support planning and guide cognitive rehabilitation or intervention.

Cognitive Rehabilitation

Cognitive Rehabilitation intervention focuses on practical techniques for the effective rehabilitation of thinking skills (such as memory, attention, processing speed and executive functioning).

It focuses on current evidenced based guidelines for optimising functioning, and often involves the use of individual strengths and compensatory approaches strategies to enhance participation in society and quality of life.

Behaviour Support

Behaviour changes are common after a neurological event and neuropsychological input can be helpful to support challenging behaviours.

The most common behaviour changes after a neurological event include verbal and physical aggression, overfamiliarity and impulsivity.

Where appropriate, a neuropsychologist can assist with a neurobehavioral assessment and with skill building and the development of positive behaviour support plans.

Counselling

A neuropsychologist can adapt evidence-based psychological therapies (where appropriate).

Counselling with a neuropsychologist can help manage stress, anxiety, adjustment and depression.
